Chapter 31
When I was at home later that night, cooking dinner, my partner Propper called.
âJust checking in to see how youâre holding up,â he said. âIâm getting kind of bored around the house, going stir crazy, you know?â
I exhaled, holding the phone between my shoulder and ear while shaping the meatballs. I wanted to tell him that I wished that was my biggest problem right now, and not the fear for my dadâs and daughterâs lives, or my sister for that matter. If all I had to worry about was going stir crazy, that would be awesome. I had heard people complaining about this lockdown for so long, especially on social media, where they shared recipes and showed themselves drinking wine at ten in the morning. It rubbed me the wrong way when thinking about Jean, who was at the hospital for hours on end, fighting for the lives affected by this. Jean, who fought for others, risking her own life, barely having time even to eat. I exhaled deeply and looked toward her house next to mine. It was screamingly empty. Gosh, I missed her. I missed holding her in my arms so terribly and wondered if I would ever get to again.
âItâs getting to us all, I guess,â I said, keeping my opinions to myself. âAnd Iâm sorry for being the reason you canât go to work. But youâre well?â
âYes, Iâm fine. Howâs your dad doing?â
I paused as my dad had another coughing attack. I could hear him wheezing in his room, fighting even to breathe. It wasnât getting any better, and my stomach churned with worry.
âNot that good, Iâm afraid.â
âIâm sorry to hear that, my friend. I truly am.â
I sniffled and stared at my hands, smeared with meat. âThanks, man. I appreciate it.â
âBut the reason I called is also that I have received news in the Candice Smith case.â
My eyes grew wide, and I grabbed the phone in my hand.
âYou did what?â
âYes. Major Walker called. He said that her brother called earlier today and told them she was with him. It was all just a misunderstanding. She was sick, and that was why he came to get her at her apartment and carried her out to the car. He had her at his house, where she was hopefully recovering. So, Walker has dismissed the case.â
I bit my cheek, wondering about this new information. It made no sense except if Bobby Kay wanted the police off his back. But why? If he had nothing to hide?
âThanks for the information,â I said.
âI thought it might bring some relief in this difficult time to know that sheâs fine. I know how much into the case you were.â
âYes, yes,â I said absentmindedly. âI was. Thanks.â
âNo problem. Take care.â
âYou too.â
I pressed my screen to hang up, then stood for a few minutes, wondering about this. I finished making the spaghetti and meatballs, then rushed upstairs to Josieâs room and placed the tray outside her room and knocked.
There was no answer.
Concerned at this, I knocked again.
